I dedicate my Cato Teaching Mural brick not to an individual teacher but to an entire school district of teachers who shaped my life at an early age and contributed to my success as an adult. Spring Branch Independent School District is a small school district on the outskirts of Houston, Texas. I attended Kindergarten through 12th grade in that district from 1960 to 1974. During that period, I had many outstanding teachers who taught me academic content and critical thinking skills that have served me well in life. Because my father had passed away when I was 2 years old, many of those teachers served as not only as teachers of content but as role models and influencers of my character in the absence of my father. Upon graduation from high school, I attended West Point. I have subsequently earned two master’s degrees and my doctoral degree. I have an outstanding family and have had two rewarding careers. I owe much of my success in life to the outstanding foundation provided by the many fine teachers of Spring Branch Independent School. It is in honor of them that I dedicate my Cato Teaching Mural brick.
