I am a sixth generation educator. Most of the women in my family are teachers in one way or another. There are those that are teachers in the classroom and there are teachers in the game of life. The teacher I wish to honor is my mother. A resilient woman, it is from my mother I get my voice.
For me, my mother is my source of strength. Over the years I have tried to glean all I could from my mother’s countless lessons. If! had to categorize what she has taught me, I would have to say Commitment, Courage, and Compassion.
The first C: Commitment – Commitment to God, Family, Profession, and Community….Commitment to Excellence. Success and happiness are only possible when you excel at doing something you enjoy. Determine what your priorities are in life, select your goals, and stand firm on your commitments.
The second C: Courage – Courage to stand up for what you believe in, to believe in your dreams, to believe in yourself and in others, and the courage to take risks. Fear is the greatest single obstacle to achievement. Make a habit of always confronting the things you fear and do them anyway. Each time you “fail” think of what you have learned. Success requires the vision to see, the faith to believe, and the courage to do.
The third C: Compassion – Being passionate about what you are doing. Passion fuels success over the long courses of life. For you to be successful, you must refuse to harden your heart because of your passions. Find something you love and do it to the best of your ability. To do that will result in success.
My mother is a shining light – like the North Star guiding me in the right direction. Steadfast and supportive, my mother is my mentor, my teacher, and my friend. I share what she has taught me about commitment, courage, and compassion – what I call the 3 C’s to success.
When people tell me – you are just like your mother – I take that as a compliment. Because if I am becoming my mother, well I say…Mom, that’s a job well done!
