Dr. Shellman was the teacher of an intro European history course I took my sophomore year at UNC Charlotte. He taught in a living history fashion. If Rhiems, France was mentioned as the coronation site for French Kings, he would then talk about the Champagne cellars beneath the city and the many vineyards in the area. I enjoyed his course so much; I took two more courses and a seminar with him.
He became “Gary” and we started playing tennis together my senior year. It was after one grueling session that we first broached the subject of a trip to Europe. After organizing the trip as a credit opportunity, Gary, myself and 5 other students took a three week trip to Europe (at a cost of $3500). We saw many amazing and historical sites. Through his connections we were able to meet a German writer and diplomat, Fritz Allemann and the notorious Albert Speer at his home in Heidelberg. That trip remains the extended moment highlight of my life.
Gary retired in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I wish he was still in town.
